Munnar, The hill station in Kerala is famous for lush greenery. Apart from tea estates, viewpoints, National parks, Dams, and waterfalls. 

It's called Kashmir of South, also the best honeymoon destination in India. 

 

The meaning of the Munnar is supposed to have derived from 3 rivers - Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni, and Kundaly rivers. 

 Weather in Munnar with Temperature 

 

Summer Season 

 

March to May, The summer begins in March and peaks in May. Temperature ranges from 19 Degrees to 36 Degrees celsius.  

 

Monsoon Season 

 

June to September, The rains do impact the visiting sightseeing places. However, It is preferred to visit now. The waterfalls have full of water with lush greenery around. The hotels do offer discounts as the occupancy would be lower compared to Season time.

 

Winter Season 

 

October to Feb, the lowest temperature would be in December. 

 

Best time to Visit Munnar - Peak Season 

 

Oct to Feb - This is the best time to travel to Munnar as the weather is Pleasant 

Highest temperature - Average around 30 Degree Celsius 

Lowest temperature - Average around 20 Degree Celsius 

 December record the average lowest temperature is around 10 to 15 -degrees celsius

20th Dec to Jan 10th - The Period is in high demand, all the resorts and Hotels charge supplementary.

Best Places in Munnar to visit 

National Parks 

Eravikulam National Park

You can spot the endangered Nilgiri Thar in this park. The highest peak in South - Anamudi Peak, located inside the park ( trekking to Anamudi peak is not allowed). The park is closed normally in Feb and March. 

Chinnar Wild Life Sanctuary 

 Near Marayoor, Here you can watch the Thoovanam waterfalls.

 

View Points

 

Pothamedu ViewPoint

 You get to see a Lofty overlook with a tea plantation, offering panoramas of the valley landscape below. Distance from Munnar town - 6Km.

 

Echo Point - 

Natural echo phenomenon and can have a brilliant view of the valley below. A beautiful place for Photography. The distance from Munnar town - 18kms.

 

 Photo Point - Popular for the Photography hence named as Photo point. The location with the background of mountains surrounded by Lush green tea gardens. The distance from Munnar town - 5kms.

 

TopStation- One of the highest points at Munnar with 1700 Meters to Sea Level. It was a transshipment point for the delivery of tea from Munnar in the early 1900s. Famous to view the exotic Neelakurinji flower which blooms every 12 years. It comes in between Kerala and Tamilnadu border. Here you can have a scenic view of the Western Ghats and the valley of Theni District, Tamilnadu.

 

Tata Tea Museum, Munnar 

Its owned and operated by Kannan Devan Hills Plantations - KDHP. You can get first-hand knowledge of the operations of Processing. Tea tasting sessions are conducted every day to taste different types and flavors of teas.

 

Dams 

Mattupetty Dam and Lake: is a storage concrete Gravity dam built into a mountain has scenic surrounds & the lake draws elephants & other animals. One can do boating in Lake - Pedal, Motor Boat, and Speedboat. You can also visit the Rose garden nearby.

 

Kundala Dam - First Arch Dam in Asia, the other name for this dam is Sethuparvati Dam. The lake has a beautiful landscape around and a famous photography Spot with a boating option.

 

Parks 

 

Blossom International Park - Its 16 acres park is famous for scenic lookout points. There is a choice of to opt - Boating cycling and roller skating. 

 

Rose Garden - on the way to Mattupetty and operated by Kerala Forest Department floricultural center. 

 

Carmelagiri Elephant Park 

 A Private Elephant park, on the way to Mattupetty Dam. Here you can enjoy the Elephant safari for 15 Minutes - a Ride on a small stretch inside the park.

 

Waterfalls 

 

Attukad Waterfalls  

The distance from Munnar is 9 Km’s, closer to Pallivasal. Trekking around the waterfall is another option to explore. 

Nayamakad Waterfalls 

The distance from Munnar is 10 km, on the way to Eravikulam sanctuary. 

Kuthumkal Waterfalls 

 The distance from Munnar is 29 Km’s and one of the famous picnic spots. During the monsoon seasons, the area is covered with the mist generated from water falling on the stones at high speed. 

Thoovanam Waterfalls 

The distance from Munnar is around 44km. It is inside the Chinnar wildlife sanctuary and requires 3 hours of trekking to cover the distance of 4 km from the Alampatty forest check post. 

Lakkam waterfalls 

The distance from Munnar town is 25km and on the route from Munnar to Marayoor.

 

Kolukkumalai Tea Estate

 

 World Highest Tea Estate - famous for the Jeep Safari. It is located at 8000 feet height, provides stunning panoramic views, fabulous scenery around.

 The places visit here - Sunrise viewpoint, Tiger rock, Tea factory visit, Kolukkumalai Peak - 1.5km trek to the viewpoint.

 

Marayoor

 

The distance from Munnar is 40 Km’s and travel time is around 1 Hour 20 Minutes. Marayoor claims to be part of an old Stone age civilization. The major Sightseeing attractions are

Megalithic Dolmens 

 Stone Age Era. 

Kovilkadavu 

You can see the Rock paintings.

Sandalwood forest 

 It is on the way to Marayoor. The entry is restricted by Forest Department and every tree is Tagged.

Kanthalloor - 14 km away from Marayoor, This village is called a fruit basket of Kerala. It's the only place in South India where Apples are Grown.

 

Cultural Centre's 

Here one can watch the Kathakali - Kerala Traditional Dance performance, Kalariyapattu - Kerala a traditional Swordfight Performance. 

 

Thirumeny Cultural Centre - Munnar Town

Punrajani Traditional Village - Pallivasal, Munnar

Located in Chithirapuram, 14km from Munnar Town, this park offers an array of activities and Off-Road rides. Some of the attractions are, Polaris ATV, Hanging Bridge, Ropeway, Zip Line, Bungee Trampoline, Free Fall.

Wonder Valley Adventure Park - 

Located in Anachal, Chithirapuram, 14km from Munnar Town and spread across seven acres. Some of the attractions are the Cable car, Rappelling, Rock climbing, ATV.

Park Timings - 08.30 AM to 06.30 PM on all days. 

 

Hot Air Balloon
